How does Leanbh work?
Street work
Leanbh is the only service that monitors the presence of child begging on the streets of Dublin on a daily basis. Leanbh staff and volunteers engage with children and parents begging on the streets and explain the risks of begging. We offer individual support, group activities and parenting support with the aim to reduce the number of children, young people and adults with babies who are begging. We also engage in public education with the view to give advice to people on what they could do when they see a child begging and to change the societal attitudes towards begging.
Support services to children and parents from minority ethnic groups
In order to meet the needs of the children and young people involved in the Leanbh service, a broad range of interventions is required.
Leanbh provides support in the following ways:
- Individual one to one support, including face to face, street based as well as web and telephone based interventions
- Group work activities
- Individual one to one parenting support
- A Mentoring programme for parents, children and teenagers
- The development of a “Day Centre”. The Leanbh day centre has been set up to provide the best possible service for the children and parents Leanbh is working with. The main focus of this facility is to provide support to children the parents who are involved in begging.
